How to get more from a book using Lexsee Chat

Lexsee Chat is a built in literacy-focused chatbot that's specialized for discussing books in depth. Lexsee Chat can discuss almost any book that's freely available on the internet, including books that are not in your library. In this section, you'll learn how to get the most from Lexsee Chat.

Note: To protect your privacy, Lexsee Chat can't view or open your personal library. As a result, Lexsee Chat cannot discuss any book that's not also freely available on the internet.

What is Lexsee Chat for?

Lexsee Chat offers a way to engage with books deeply that doesn't require reading and decoding skills to be at the same level as comprehension. This can be especially helpful for those who struggle with the mechanics of reading, but who have the desire to engage with the subject and develop their critical thinking.

Lexsee Chat can:

  • Provide ideas about what to look for in the next chapter as you read

  • Answer story detail questions such as character names or locations

  • Explain concepts and explore topics such as why a book might be considered to be an allegory or a meditation by critics and scholars

An example

Here's an example of a Lexsee Chat answer. Noah has asked Lexsee Chat about Animal Farm by George Orwell and why it's often referred to as an allegory.

Although Lexsee Chat can discuss topics, help to flesh out details or remind students of particulars, Lexsee Chat is not a 'cheat bot'. It won't summarize books or write book reports, for example.

Start a discussion

To begin a conversation tap the big button shown below, or tap the purple sound wave button. Lexsee chat will ask you how you want to begin your conversation.

Note: In order to use Lexsee Chat, you must allow Lexsee access to your computer's microphone. See below for details about enabling your microphone for Lexsee.

When you start a conversation, Lexsee Chat will prompt you with a quick introduction and ask what book you'd like to discuss. You can stop the conversation by clicking the red X button to the right of the sound wave, and you can temporarily mute your microphone by clicking the microphone icon to the left of the sound wave.

If you stop the conversation, Lexsee Chat will restart the conversation from scratch. Lexsee Chat does not save your previous discussions.

Allow microphone

In order for Lexsee Chat to discuss a book with you, microphone access is required. If your microphone has not yet been authorized for Lexsee, you'll see a prompt asking for permission for Lexsee to access your microphone.

Click Allow while visiting the site to enable this and other core Lexsee features including Lexsee Chat and Lexsee pronunciation help and out loud reading practice.

You can always opt to change Lexsee's access to your microphone, sound, or reset history and usage data by clicking the View site information button shown below located next to the the app.lexsee.ai URL.

Conversation limits

Lexsee Chat allows for a budget of time to discuss books each day. The time will reset to zero every 24 hour cycle. Daily allocations accumulate from one day to the next.
